University Affairs recently published a story about our initiative. The magazine and website are published by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. The article summarizes our plans and how we are bringing a pioneering idea to our campuses in Waterloo — WLU and UW.

The article also features quotations from popular economics professor Larry Smith.

Here is an excerpt of the story:

Two years ago, University of Waterloo student Ryan Chen-Wing had an epiphany: he would launch Canada’s first student-run credit union on his campus.

He believed such a service could provide students with financial products and advice of better value than they receive from traditional banks.

“I had no issue with the basic logic of what he intended to do,” says Larry Smith, adjunct associate professor of economics, whom Mr. Chen-Wing consulted. “I think he’s correct that students have some significant money for the first time in their lives and that there’s a gap in their knowledge [of what to do with it].”

As the project advances we will want more people to know about our plans and more students to know how we are developing superior services for them. This exposure will be helpful in reaching those people.

This is better than over the phone and certainly by email.  Set up a time to sit down and discuss.  Share your feelings and be sensitive to his or her space. If he feels backed into a corner, it is hard to create positive action.  Propose a repayment schedule that you think is fair and and a back-up strategy if it doesn't work (i.e. talking to his parents, going to the small claims"
